It’s great to be back in person!

We love it when a plan comes together! Along with the New Year comes new opportunities to help children living in the Bay Area’s under-served communities gain access to books! Our amazing volunteers have been working tirelessly on our current library revitalization project at Washington Elementary. With the support of our generous donors, we have been able to supply Washington Elementary with 1400 brand new books for the revitalized library and over 2000 gently used books for in-class book collections for the students!

That is a lot of books to process! But our 24+ volunteers persevered through several outdoor processing sessions so that we could deliver the books in time for Washington Elementary students to start their year off with a selection of high quality, relevant and diverse reading materials. Children at Washington Elementary were excited to check out the new books including books in the very popular new graphic novel section which our large donation of graphic novels helped establish. We also gifted Washington Elementary with a large selection of biographies of currently relevant and culturally relevant people, which they used to create a new biographies section.

Next up! We continue to work with school officials to comply with Covid19 safety protocols and best practices and will hopefully soon begin to paint new literary themed murals for the library and create a new “Kinder” area with a colorful new reading rug for younger children to gather on for read-alouds.

We are in the planning phases now for our next library revitalization project at Santee Elementary in San Jose. Please consider a donation to support this project, and please sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or Twitter to stay informed about our upcoming volunteer opportunities.

We are extremely thankful to all the volunteers and donors that make these exciting school library transformations possible. Representation matters and you are not only helping children in under-served communities gain access to high quality books, but you are also helping to support literacy and the next generation of readers!
