Giving Back with Book Drives

In the past couple of months, dedicated Access Books Bay Area volunteers Theresa Pham of San Mateo, Jaime Abdilla of Burlingame, and the Gunn High School Youth Community Service (YCS) club of Palo Alto organized three very successful book drives that raised a total of roughly 2,200 books for children in need.

San Mateo Book Drive

San Mateo mom Theresa learned about Access Books Bay Area through VolunteerMatch. Intrigued by our mission, she collaborated with her children’s school – St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School – to run a book drive during the season of giving. Theresa publicized the book drive on her neighborhood NextDoor page and received help from school staff, students, and parent volunteers. On December 20th, Theresa delivered 15 boxes of 1,000 very high quality, high-interest books in excellent condition.

Burlingame Book Drive

2021 got off to a strong start with not one, but two successful book drives! Burlingame mom and Biotechnology Instructor Jaime organized and led a book drive in her community. She worked with other local moms of 2nd and 3rd grade students in the area, and thoughtfully created a flyer to specifically ask for high quality and high-interest books. Jaime, her children, and the volunteers she enlisted collected roughly 700 books in great condition from friends and neighbors.

Palo Alto Book Drive

In the latter half of January, the Gunn High School YCS club of Palo Alto ran a book drive in conjunction with a Martin Luther King Day service event, and received broad participation from enthusiastic members of their school community. They were able to collect over 500 engaging and quality titles for K-8 students in need.

The Access Books Bay

Area team will use the books collected from these book drives to fill our Library Lending Book Boxes, a COVID-19 focused initiative that keeps students in low-income communities reading for pleasure during these challenging times. Thank you Theresa and Jaime for your effort, generosity, and support!
